Delivery and evaluation of training courses

Our bespoke training courses are a brilliant way of engaging with innovative, critical evidence bases - but how do you know what impact they are making in your workforce, if you don’t test them?

Our bespoke training courses are a brilliant way of engaging with innovative, critical evidence bases - but how do you know what impact they are making in your workforce, if you don’t test them?

That’s why we always offer pre- and post- training attitudes and knowledge testing with all of our bespoke training courses.

No matter the topic we are delivering, we will design a bespoke attitudes and knowledge test for all delegates to complete before training commences, that is then repeated immediately after training, and 6-12 weeks later.

Our approach to confidential attitudes and knowledge testing means that our commissioners can explore what works, and what impact the training has had on delegates as time passes. It is common for delegates to accurately recall information immediately after a training course they enjoyed, but the real test of value is how much they retain months later, and whether they have felt able to implement that training in their day-to-day role.

The great news is, our evaluation and testing is often included in the price of our bespoke training!

VictimFocus APTI Advocate Course

Do you want to learn how to become an independent trauma advocate who challenges the medical model of mental health in your work?

You will study our resources, materials and learn how to deliver new programmes of trauma-informed, anti-victim blaming, strengths based work directly to children and adults who have been subjected to abuse.

  • Learn more

Do you want to learn how to become an independent trauma advocate who challenges the medical model of mental health in your work?

Do you already work with children or adults, and you are concerned that they are being labelled and pathologised as mentally ill or disordered when in fact, they are distressed and traumatised?

In the 2022 book ‘Sexy But Psycho’, Dr Jessica Taylor outlined her vision for developing and rolling out training, resources and networks for professionals who wanted to advocate for people who had been diagnosed as mentally ill when they disclosed distress, abuse, trauma or oppression.

From that book came the ITIM (Indicative Trauma Impact Manual) the world’s first completely trauma-informed manual of its kind, designed to indicate, respond to, and understand every kind of human trauma and emotion. Building on decades of research, case studies, and evidence published by practitioners, academics, and scholars in the field, the ITIM equips progressive professionals with evidence-based, anti-oppressive, anti-blaming and non-diagnostic information about a wide range of human emotion, thought, and behaviour.

Building on the quickly growing consensus that trauma-informed, anti-oppressive practice is vital to the way we understand society, ourselves, and our clients; this book provides the first comprehensive alternative to diagnostic manuals.

The manual describes, explains, and explores everything from nightmares to self-harming in an A-Z of emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are common in traumatised and distressed people. This edition also includes diagrams, theories, tools, and peer reviewed evidence throughout.

You will study our resources, materials and learn how to deliver new programmes of trauma-informed, anti-victim blaming, strengths based work directly to children and adults who have been subjected to abuse.

    Course content:

    • Learn what it means to be trauma-informed, and the evidence you need to back up your approaches.
    • Learn the history of psychiatry, psychology and trauma.
    • Understand how pathologisation links to victim blaming and oppression of marginalised groups.
    • Understand the theories and approaches to trauma-informed working.
    • Explore common ways that children and adults are blamed, shamed and discriminated against.
    • Explore our resources and tools, to implement in your own practice.

What will you learn from the course?

This course provides the evidence, theories, and skills you will need to:

    • Support adults and children who have been pathologised and labelled with psychiatric disorders when they have been subjected to abuse and trauma.
    • Challenge notes, reports, and assessments with evidence which demonstrates that people who are traumatised and distressed are not mentally ill.
    • Discuss and debate wrongful diagnosis, or deliberate diagnostic processes in order to discredit a child or adult in distress.

This course is the first of it’s kind, and will teach professionals how to advocate and protect their clients from pathologisation.
